Dodoma University and St. John’s University of Tanzania both opened in 2007. Both universities have been recipients of post secondary textbooks from PEN Trust’s third container.

Teddy Bears for Pre Schoolers
Mother Bear Project is a non profit based in Minnesota that sends hand knit teddy bears all over the world. PEN Trust was fortunate enough to have 250 bears added to our last book container.

Scholarship Students
PEN Trust has three new scholarship students in the Dodoma area. Several US sponsors in Minnesota, Maine and Massachusetts are responsible for the addition of these three students. Besides school fees, national and mock exams these students also received mountain bikes and other necessary items to ease their studies.

Meet the Brinkman Family
Russ, Heidi, Justin and Jilliane Brinkman from Rogers, Minnesota, USA have shown their support for the work of PEN Trust in various ways. They have donated toys, games, clothing, a boom box and school supplies of their own. They have also sponsored one student, Sophia Mohamed, to secondary school in Dodoma and have supplied her with a care package needed for boarding school. They also send care packages for other scholarship students and younger children filled with beautiful new and used clothing. We are so grateful for all the ways this family has touched the hearts of children half way around the world in Tanzania.

Huruma Orphan Centre
Huruma means mercy in Kiswahili. At the Huruma Orphan Centre in Mnadani, both orphans and vulnerables are taught life skills, share a meal and just have time to play with kids in the same situation each Saturday. The centre hosts 70+ children each week- 7 of these children are known to be HIV+. PEN Trust brought guests Don and Joanie Hawkinson one Saturday as we prepared a meal and bought sodas for the kids as well as distributed a box of Feed My Starving Children food to each child.

Faraja Tutoring Centre
Faraja has 100 students that have finished primary school through Standard 7 but either do not have the funds or need extra tutoring help before starting secondary school. The program does not have funds for adequate classrooms so they meet under this tree. Most of the students that come to this centre are considered orphaned or vulnerables.

Don and Joanie Hawkinson’s Visit
Don and Joanie Hawkinson extended their safari and visit in Bukoba, TZ in order to spend a few days with us in Dodoma. We first met Don in Minneapolis when as our lawyer, he filed our paperwork for the 501c3 status. We are so glad they could join PEN Trust in our work and to learn more about our programs.
