Books for Africa
In 2004 PEN Trust had the opportunity to distribute books sent to Central Tanzania by Books for Africa, a wonderful organization located in my native Minnesota.
These are some of the pictures that we took during the process of receiving, sorting, and distributing the books to schools and libraries.
This picture shows students at the Msalato Girls Secondary School unpacking their new books.
The first step in the process though, was when the books arrived in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania’s largest city, and were loaded onto a truck.

They were shipped to a warehouse in Dodoma, the capital of Tanzania and PEN Trust’s base of operations.
This photo gives you a good idea how many books there were.

Volunteers helped us unpack, stamp, and sort the books.

Here’s a big stack of the sorted books.

We brought many of the books to the Dodoma Public Library. This picture shows staff members receiving the donation.

Many of the books went to schools. These little girls are students at the Water Project Kindergarten, a Catholic school.

Here I am checking out a book with a teacher at another school, the Nkukungu Kindergarten.

These students are attending lessons, with new BFA-donated books, in Bwawani Primary School.

And these younger ones are students at the Martin Luther Academy.

Students at Ipagala Primary School holding their new books in the air.

Finally, students from Mwenge Secondary School, which also received books.
